Sports

Physical exercise and education are an important element in Creative Arts' program. In the lower grades, classroom teachers regularly organize games and exercise with their students during time spent “on the yard” throughout the day. The afterschool program also offers students of all ages opportunities to participate in supervised games and clubs focused on karate, yoga, hip-hop dance, and other activities.

More formal physical education is offered in the 7th and 8th grades one day each week. Students receive direct instruction and modeling in many competitive and non-competitive games and activities, such as jump rope, hula hoop, track, volleyball, basketball, softball, tether ball, futsal, kickball, soccer, and “capture the flag.” Grades are given for participation and not athletic ability.

In the 5th grade and above, students are also encouraged to participate at no cost in Creative Arts' competitive sports teams, including cross country/track, volleyball, basketball, and futsal. All interested students are placed on a team that best fits their level of play, and practices are held two days each week. Most equipment is provided.

Creative Arts participates in the San Francisco Athletic League, a collective formed by athletic directors from K-8 programs throughout the city. Teachers, parents, and alumni volunteers coach Creative Arts' teams.

Sports are also showcased each season through the Creative Arts community tradition of hosting students vs. staff basketball and futsal games.
